Why Third-Party Insurance Can Be More Expensive Than Fully Comprehensive

When people think about taking out car insurance in Spain they naturally assume that the cheapest option must be the most basic cover which of course is third-party car insurance.

New research recently undertaken by a major car insurance company reveal some surprising results, namely that in some cases third-party insurance was actually more expensive than fully comprehensive car insurance.

Naturally motorists are bound to expect and assume a third-party only policy would be the cheapest because they actually offer the least amount of cover. In fact this type of insurance is obligatory by Spanish law and so most people assume in order to be insured they can just take out this type of insurance.

One of the reasons these results are surprising is that many young drivers in Spain take out the third-party cover because it is the most minimum basic cover of attainable.

As we know with young drivers they are the most highest risk on the roads.

There is a reason that they are charged in many cases astronomical premiums and that is simply that statistically they do have more accidents than people who are older and more experienced on the roads.

Because of this the insurance companies have actually increased the third-party car insurance costs because they are being hit by higher claims as a result of accidents caused by young drivers often showing off to their friends or driving under the influence of alcohol.

Even if third-party insurance is slightly cheaper than fully comprehensive insurance, the benefits and extras in the policy of a fully comprehensive car insurance, means the decision is a no-brainer really. Typically you will get full breakdown cover which is invaluable when you break down Spanish roads and your grasp of the Spanish language is not so good.

This is just one of the benefits in fully comprehensive policies, the most major one being that even if an accident is your fault, the damage to your own vehicle and yourself is covered – apart from the compulsory and voluntary excess of course.

Remember that third-party car insurance will not cover any damage to your own vehicle if you are involved in an accident and it is your fault. Your car insurance will simply cover any damage incurred to the other vehicle.

So the message is simple – don’t just get a quote for third-party only insurance, not even bothering to ask how much the other options are.

Get quotations and price comparisons for third-party fire and theft as well as fully comprehensive car insurance in addition to the most basic third-party only option.

When you are searching for the cheapest insurance one of the best bits of advice we can give you is to contact an insurance broker who will take your personal details as well as all the details of the make and model you wish to have insured.

The short answer of course is yes although it is surprising just how many people are not sure whether they are obliged to take out car insurance in Spain.

Firstly let’s cover the question from the position of somebody who does not live in Spain but who intends to travel with their vehicle or car to Spain for a short visit.

In this instance it is essential that you either contact your insurance company, broker or simply read the documentation to see if you will be covered to drive your car abroad in Spain.

Many car insurance policies include a limited period for which you can drive abroad.

For many people who have cars registered in the United Kingdom you will find you will be allowed to drive on the continent, in Europe, for up to 90 days. Check the small print because often it is a requirement of your insurance policy that you notify your insurer in advance of the dates that your car will be out of the country.

Secondly let’s cover this question from the position of somebody who is resident and living permanently in the country of Spain. In this instance there is absolutely no doubt that it is compulsory and obligatory to insure your car for use on the Spanish roads. In Spanish the translation is seguro obligatorio.

The minimum car insurance in Spain is the third-party cover. Third-party car insurance covers any claim by third parties but does not cover damage to the driver’s own car. If you are concerned about the value of your car or vehicle then consider taking out comprehensive car insurance Spain which includes everything you need to protect yourself against damages, theft, fire and any personal injury claims.

What Are the Risks of Not Taking Out Car Insurance?

Many people in Spain to drive without any insurance whatsoever. Of course this is not only illegal but extremely dangerous. If you are involved in accidents in Spain you could find yourself being taken to court and sue for an extremely large amount if the other party involved in the accident has suffered personal injuries and requires extensive medical treatment and attention on a long-term basis.

Not only that but he could be facing a fine of at least €3000 or possibly even be sent to prison if you are a persistent offender. Why take the risk?

If you do a bit of research on the Internet you will very quickly be able to fill out a few on some websites will be e-mailed quotes the same day. The cost of insuring your car in Spain is really not so expensive and certainly not worth going to prison for by not having any insurance.

If you have any experience of living in Spain you will be familiar with the frequent checks and stops that the police carry out at many junctions and roundabouts. Often they may just look in your boot but just as often they will ask for the documentation for your car, including wanting to see the cover note.

You can even be fined if it is not obvious that you have paid for your car insurance even though you may have the policy documentation! So if you have gone to the bank to pay your car insurance keep the payment slip with your documents.

If you have brought your car to Spain and it is registered in the United Kingdom and still has UK licence plates then once you have been in Spain for six months you are legally obliged to import the car into Spain and reregister it on to Spanish license plates.

We get many questions about insurance concerning UK registered vehicles. Because of this we have a separate page entitled Can I Insure My UK Registered Car in Spain? but the short answer is that your car has to be insured somewhere whether it be the United Kingdom or Spain.

There are a number of insurance companies and insurance brokers in Spain who offer Spanish car insurance on UK registered vehicles although this is very much a grey area so we highly recommend you do your research and make the decision yourself with which you feel most comfortable bearing in mind the risks involved.

A no claims bonus is also commonly referred to as NCB.

For each year that you drive your car (or other vehicle) in Spain without needing to make a claim on your insurance policy, you earn one years no claims bonus. This no claims bonus is sometimes also referred to as a no claims discounts Spain and in Spanish is known as prima de no reclamacion.

This is because each year you build your no claims bonus you are rewarded for your safe driving record by getting a discount off your car insurance payment.

Once you have built up a no claims bonus (NCB) of five years there are no further discounts, but at least at this stage you can often get up to 75% off the premium price that a driver without any no claims bonus would have to pay.

Often if you have a minor accident in Spain with your car it is often worth evaluating whether you should make a claim on your car insurance Spain or not.

In any event you need to consider that you will have to pay an excess which is usually around €250 anyway, but also it will mean that you will lose your no claims bonus unless you have protected it by paying an additional, but admittedly small, extra payment on top of your premium.

Is Spanish No Claims Bonus Valid in the United Kingdom?

If you are moving back to the United Kingdom from Spain you may be wondering if the no claims bonus that you have built up on your Spanish car insurance will be recognised and valid in the United Kingdom when you come to take out car insurance in the UK.

The answer to this question is basically no. Very few insurance companies in the UK will recognise your no claims bonus built up while in Spain.

Fortunately it does tend to work the other way round, in other words most insurance companies in Spain will accept the no claims bonus that you have built in another country such as the United Kingdom. However it is quite likely that they will require proof and documentation as evidence so don’t be tempted to lie about this!

Can I Protect My No Claims Bonus in Spain?

Yes it is possible to pay a small additional amount on top of your quotation for car insurance in Spain, this will enable you to protect your no claims bonus in the event of having to make a claim on your insurance policy.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that your premiums will not go up because there are other factors involved – for example car insurance premiums may just be on the rise anyway due to many other people having car accidents in Spain.

What is certain is that without your no claims bonus your premiums would be a lot higher without the discounts that you have earned.

Below we have a video explaining the meaning of no claims bonus for Spain and no claims discounts in Spain. Learn how to get cheaper car insurance through building up better no claims discounts:

We hope you have found this article on building up a no claims bonus Spain helpful and on the other pages you will find many other tips and suggestions on other ways of keeping your premiums as low as you possibly can as well as advice on how to find cheaper car insurance Spain.

Previously on www.carinsuranceSpain.org we contacted a large number of Spanish insurance brokers as well as Spanish insurance companies who provide quotes for car insurance for vehicles registered in Spain.

Our previous real life case study to find the cheapest car insurance Spain was conducted back in February of 2011. The vehicle we used as an example in order to get various different quotations was a Citroen Picasso.

Because the insurance runs out in September of 2011, we decided to review the situation once more and get a number of different quotes to see if the market for car insurance Spain has dramatically changed. We were curious to see what the lowest quote would be and whether a different company would provide the cheapest quote in comparison to the last case study we conducted.

Again, being English we made sure to contact either brokers or companies who would provide quotations and policies in English. In other words aimed at expats in Spain who are searching for car insurance.

Also the results of the previous case study influenced our decision is in who to approach for quotations for car insurance. There was some companies who we contacted last time that never ever got back to us with a quote. Because of this we decided that they were not worth our time and effort in contacting them again and giving them a second chance. We think that this is quite a realistic real-life approach where once you have been disappointed with the company you rarely go back to them again.

This may be harsh and may be unfair but in our opinion this is how most people would search so therefore companies that we declined to approach include Dragon Insurance, INOV Insurance or Hamilton Consultants. Once again we did not contact Linea Directa who are a major providor of car insurance in Spain.

We are disappointed that such a major insurer does not offer online quotations, neither does it allow us to e-mail them directly without registering first. We certainly believe that having to register yourself first is a massive obstacle that most people will decline to take. Once again it’s very poor quality customer service which unfortunately is commonplace in Spain.

So let’s take a look at the companies that we did approach and he came back to us with quotations.

Type of Car and Driver to be Insured:

This was the specification i.e. the personal information of our driver as well as the specifications of the vehicle: we wanted to get the cheapest possible quote for car insurance on a fully comprehensive car insurance Spain basis with an excess of €250. The car make and model is a Citroen Xsara Picasso SX (95) 1587 P, M. Engine size 1401-1899.

Car Accident in Spain

The car is Spanish as in left-hand drive and registered in Spain. The car is a diesel and is parked on a driveway at night with no alarm or immobiliser. Private use only i.e. no business use. The car has five seats and was new in 2004 with an approximate value now of €8000. This car insurance quotation is for a car based on the Costa Blanca with the driver aged 45, having an occupation in sales, with four years no claims bonus in Spain and having a full EU license for over 10 years. Annual mileage was estimated to be 15,000 km.

This exact same information was provided to all the various insurance companies and brokers.

Quote for Car Insurance from Knight Insurance

The first company to get back to us with a quote were Knight Insurance brokers with a quotation fromACG Motor Plan for €454.

We did go back to Knight Insurance and try to get a better quote these were the options:

“In relation with your mail and the renewal of your car insurance we have to inform you that the information provided to you for fully comprehensive cover with an excess of 250 euros is the best price we can offer you. Now to be able to reduce this premium you might agree to change insurance level, the 2 levels down are:

Third party Fire and theft: 311 euros

Third party only: 252 euros

You have to know that both levels mentioned above does not include road side assistence, legal defence and windscreen cover.

Quotation from Abbeygate Insurance

The next company to respond was Abbeygate insurance with an e-mail asking us for a telephone number at which we can be contacted. We declined to provide this because we were travelling around Europe at the time and there is no reason whatsoever with the information we had provided why a quotation was not possible.

Later that day we received another e-mail asking us how we had heard of Abbeygate Insurance together with another question concerning whether the policy was named drivers or an open policy, we answered these two questions but as yet have not received any quotation back from Abbeygate Insurance.

Should you wish to contact Abbeygate here are their contact details:

Results from Expat Insurance in Spain

Next to reply to our e-mail was Expat Insurance in Spain who asked us a couple of questions. Bizarrely when we reread our original e-mail we found we had already provided the information requested!

Nevertheless we then received a quotation very quickly which actually so far is the cheapest we have found:

Prices from The Insurance Centre

Next to reply to our e-mail was The Insurance Centre with an incredibly detailed response which helpfully listed the alternatives to taking out comprehensive car insurance.

This is a real case study in which we give the exact same details to a number of different Spanish car insurance companies as well as well-known Spanish insurance brokers.

The aim of course is to reveal who provides the cheapest car insurance in Spain. As well as looking for the cheapest quotation we also look at other interesting elements such as the customer service and the speed of replies to our request for a quotation for car insurance. Note that this case study was using companies and brokers who provide Spanish car insurance services and quotations in English.

Specification of Car and Driver to be Insured:

This was the specification i.e. the personal information of our driver as well as the specifications of the vehicle: we wanted to get the cheapest possible quote for car insurance on a fully comprehensive basis with an excess of €200. The car make and model is a Citroen Xsara Picasso SX (95) 1587 P, M. Engine size 1401-1899.

The car is Spanish as in left-hand drive and registered in Spain. The car is a diesel and is parked on a driveway at night with no alarm or immobiliser. Private use only i.e. no business use. The car has five seats and was new in 2004 with an approximate value now of €8000. This car insurance quotation is for a car based on the Costa Blanca with the driver aged over 40, having an occupation in sales, with four years no claims in Spain and having a full EU license for over 10 years. Annual mileage was estimated to be 15,000 km.

This exact same information was provided to all the various insurance companies and brokers.

Quotation from Abbeygate Insurance

The first company to respond was Abbeygate insurance with a very professional response and quotation of comprehensive cover for 492.00 Euros or comprehensive with protected bonus for 535.00 Euros. Both these quotations included breakdown with Home Start & Legal Assistance Cover (provided the vehicle meets the recovery companys’ criteria with regards to age and type of vehicle). Well done Abbeygate.

Insurance Quote from Knight Insurance/Liberty Seguros

Just slightly behind Abbeygate in terms of quick response time was Knight Insurance brokers. We were absolutely massively impressed with this quote because it was extremely detailed unlike other quotations which merely just gave us a price for car insurance Spain. In this instance Knight Insurance gave us a document from the company providing the quotation which was Liberty Seguros in Barcelona who are a very well-known and respected Spanish insurance company.

Quotations for car insurance in Spain on our Citroen Picasso car from Liberty Seguros/Knight Insurance:

THIRD PARTY €260.88
THIRD PARTY + FIRE €284.34
THIRD PARTY + THEFT + FIRE €317.36
THIRD PARTY + THEFT + FIRE + TOTAL LOSS €338.16
FULLY COMPREHENSIVE €547.12
FULLY COMPREHENSIVE + EXCESS €300 – € 419.37
FULLY COMPREHENSIVE + EXCESS €375 – € 405.67
FULLY COMPREHENSIVE + EXCESS €450 – € 396.69
FULLY COMPREHENSIVE + EXCESS €600 - € 388.79
FULLY COMPREHENSIVE + EXCESS €900 - € 386.22
FULLY COMPREHENSIVE + EXCESS €1500 - € 379.60
FULLY COMPREHENSIVE + EXCESS €3000 – € 372.96
FULLY COMPREHENSIVE + EXCESS €6000 - € 368.47

As you can see from the information above, Liberty Seguros give us not only a quote for full coverage car insurance but also third party car insurance as well as third party fire and theft car insurance. Even the quotation for fully comprehensive insurance is broken down with variations in case we wish to increase our excess, thereby reducing the premiums. Although we did originally state that we wish to have an excess of €200, we thought this was a nice touch because it then gave us the information to be able to know what risk we had to take on if we wished to get a cheaper price.

As well as this level of detail, Liberty Seguros also provided precise and detailed information on exactly what was and wasn’t included. This included detailed information on whether the windscreen was covered or not as well as the exact amounts of medical coverage. These are just a couple of examples, here is a complete list of the level of detailed information clearly highlighting exactly what came under the terms of the policy and quotation or not:

Mandatory liability cover
Voluntary liability cover: limit 50,000,000 euros
Liability from the cargo: limit 60,000 euros
Criminal defence: includes free choice of legal representation
Bail bonds: includes free choice of legal representation
Claims for damage
Subsidy for suspension of a driving licence
Damage to own vehicle
Excess for own vehicle damage
Total loss of the vehicle
Vehicle fire
Theft of vehicle
Broken windows
Replacement vehicle
Accidents to the driver
Passengers
Roadside assistance from kilometre 0 (emergency service provided from the door of your home)
Worldwide assistance for insured individuals
Processing of fines
Cover for optional accessories declared in the policy

Price from BC Seguros

Next we received a message from BC Seguros informing us that AXA is not offering market rates for auto coverage presently but to try either Linea Directa Spain or Balumba. BC Seguros however are providing insurance quotations for home insurance in Spain as well as health insurance Spain. We did at least appreciate the response and suggestions rather than them taking the easy option of completely ignoring our request for information.

Quote from The Insurance Centre

Next in our real insurance case study we received a very detailed response from the Insurance Centre as follows:

Third party only……………………..…… 256.68 Euros
Third party fire & theft…………………… 318.33 Euros
Third party fire, theft & Total Loss………. 344.19 Euros
Fully comprehensive……………………… 445.17 Euros (excess of €300)

We were informed that these prices would insure the vehicle for anybody over the age of 25 years whom has held a driving licence for longer than two years. It also includes road side assistance, bail bond, legal defence, windscreen cover, a green card and protected No Claims. Also included in the policy are:-

Accessories:
Fixed installations and improved elements integrated into the vehicle.

Total Loss in vehicles over 4 years old:

Damage, Fire and Theft covers will be indemnified on an Actual Cash Value basis plus 30%.

Liability as a pedestrian and as a non-professional cyclist.

The Policyholder and the main driver have liability cover up to an indemnity limit of 600.000 euros for their liability stemming from being pedestrians and non-professional cyclists.

Luggage and personal effects (Damage/Fire/Theft)

Following an accident, there will be cover up to 500 euros per claim, for the loss of luggage and personal effects, depending on the cover shown in the policy.

Damage or flaws caused to the vehicle’s interior upholstery (Damage/Fire/Theft)

Damage or flaws caused to the insured vehicle’s interior upholstery as a result of assisting accident victims, up to a maximum €300.

Fully Comprehensive Cover with an excess

If there is a Total Loss the amount of the excess will not be deduced.

Substitute Vehicle following a Fire or Theft

If Fire or Theft covers have been contracted, a substitute vehicle can be given up to a period of 45 days, after the first 72 hours from the moment the claim occurred. This is included in the above prices.

If you should require a courtesy car to be included due to an accident then there is an extra premium of €29.70. If the car is under 5 years old, cover can also be included for mechanical breakdown and this would increase the premium by €39.58.

Personal Accident Cover

3000 euros will be paid as an advance towards burial costs.

A telephone advice service will be given for the Loss (confiscation) of Driving License or Loss of points.

Cover for appealing against fines.

Ibex Insurance Services

Ibex insurance services provided us a quotation of fully comprehensive car insurance for 533.65 Euros with an excess of 200 Euros. This also included a named driver to include Legal & Breakdown and windscreen cover. Although we didn’t ask for it, quite helpfully Ibex also quoted for third party only car insurance of 326.78 Euros.

Easy Cover Insurance

Strangely we received an e-mail from Easycover Insurance concerning our Citroen Xsara, to say they had saved our quotation on their system and that they were unable to send out a written quotation. They suggested we e-mail them our phone number or phone them to find out the quotation. Quite why they couldn’t say in the e-mail how much the quote was for, is a mystery to us still. With plenty of other quotes and quicker responses from other Spanish insurance brokers and companies we just didn’t bother.

Spanish Car Insurance Case Study Conclusions

Final notes on our case study for car insurance: We didn’t receive responses from Dragon Insurance, INOV Insurance or Hamilton Consultants. We also did not contact Linea Directa by telephone, who are a major providor of car insurance in Spain. We did visit the Linea Directa website but it told us they did not do quotations online, neither could we email them. As it takes ages to give the whole detailed specification, we made our life simplier by getting the large amount of quotations above from the other rival companies. As you can see we unearthed some very good information from which you can base your own decision on who best to contact when searching for cheaper insurance in Spain for your Spanish car.

Clearly results will vary depending on people’s individual circumstances but at least this case study gives you an idea of where to start and who to contact first.

We occasionally get e-mails and phone calls from people asking us how much does car insurance in Spain cost.

Well we presume that these people are asking in a roundabout way whether car insurance in Spain is actually expensive or cheap relative to other countries.

The reason we say this is because car insurance varies in price depending not just on the car but on the personal circumstances of the vehicle’s owner.

Car insurance varies in cost depending on many different factors such as the age of the driver, the location the vehicle will be kept not just the actual town which could be a high crime area or low crime area, but also specifically whether the car will be kept on a driveway or in a garage overnight.

In our personal experience of living in Spain and running two cars we can say the insurance costs seem to be slightly higher than they would be in the United Kingdom where we are from.

The quotations and prices you will get on car insurance are not necessarily that much higher – we would probably estimate 20%. There are many different factors such as here in Spain - we find the roads quieter and less congested and therefore because of this there is less chance of an accident. But having said that we have had far more near misses on the roads in Spain than we ever had in the United Kingdom. The standard of driving in Spain does seem to be a lot lower with many people unfamiliar as to what to do at junctions and roundabouts, this includes Spanish people as well as tourists who are visiting the country and who can be excused for a lack of knowledge on driving regulations in Spain.

Petty crime does seem to be a little bit higher here, there are a number of break-ins specifically to steal car radios and stereos.

Generally we would probably suggest that premiums are slightly higher here in Spain due to the lack of competition. In the United Kingdom all sorts of major companies are involved in car insurance, not just the insurance companies themselves but major retailers such as Tesco’s and Sainsbury’s.

Then there are the huge amount of price comparison insurance websites which it seems on every advert break, no matter what program you are watching, you can’t seem to escape those annoying go compare adverts, the adorable Meerkats or our personal pet hate – Churchill!

In many respects living in Spain can be like living in the United Kingdom 10 years ago, many things are much further behind and not as advanced, certainly the Internet is one of those good examples. There is really a complete lack of decent price comparison websites for car insurance in Spain.

So until that time, typically you are best just getting on the phone to your local car insurance broker and getting them to do the shopping around for your Spain car insurance.

We are frequently asked questions from people who have moved to Spain from the United Kingdom and who have driven their car down to Spain. The question of course is what do we do now with our car and can we insure it in Spain?

In all honesty our advice is not to bring your car to Spain but instead to move to Spain and buy a Spanish registered vehicle.

This will save you endless amounts of stress and worry that your car is not legal on the Spanish roads and that your insurance will be invalid if you have an accident in Spain.

Bizarrely many people think that they can bring their foreign car to Spain and somehow even be exempt from having to insure it at all!

There does seem to be a lot of confusion about this issue because if you go on the Internet and look at forums you will see conflicting advice from different people.

The fact that it is perfectly possible to go to many very well-known expatriate insurance brokers and get car insurance on your UK registered car, makes many people think it is perfectly okay. We personally know of people who have insured their UK registered car in Spain and they have had an accident and they have been able to claim successfully.

We would however strongly suggest against this because the fact is under Spanish law if your car is kept in Spain for more than six months it must be registered in Spain and driven on Spanish license plates and you must of course pay the appropriate level of road tax, known as SUMA.

It is of course possible to bring your car to Spain and then go through the paperwork process of importing it legally and having it re-registered in Spain. If you don’t do this then you will end up driving your United Kingdom registered car in Spain without valid insurance because even if you have taken out insurance in Britain then you will only be allowed to drive abroad for a certain amount of days each year.

As well as this, your MOT will expire unless you drive the car back to the UK each year which of course is very costly, probably about €500 return when fuel and tolls are taken into account. Therefore your car will not be legal on the Spanish roads. In Spain there is the equivalent of the MOT which is the ITV.

The Spanish ITV is a test at a government approved location whereby a number of checks on the vehicle performed such as brakes, windscreen wipers and emmissions to name just a few of the checks. This is the see if your car is roadworthy and not dangerous to other motorists. Getting a Spanish ITV on the UK registered car is simply pointless and does not make your car legal in Spain.

The insurance market in Spain is pretty similar to most other countries in that there is a most basic type of insurance that purely covers anyone else involved in an accident or claim, this is known as third-party car insurance, with a slightly higher level of cover being third-party fire and theft car insurance Spain to the highest level of cover which is called comprehensive insurance.
